Surfboard quality Balsa has been in short supply with high demand for some time now.
We have committed to a mill in So. America to take all their 9' and 10 ' stock.
Although we are known for our rare exotic hardwoods, we are now stocking Balsa for high end surfboards.
The word is getting out that we have this stock and local So. Cal. shapers are coming in.
It will be great to see what is done with this stuff.
Maybe I'll see some out in the water!
It takes about 60 board feet, + or - of Balsa to make a 10 ft. blank.
About $400 - $430 worth of wood.
The best Balsa grows on the equator with an average weight of 10 lbs. per cubic foot.
Other uses are aircraft, flotation filler, model making, and I think I saw John Wayne break a chair over another guy in a bar room brawl made of Balsa.
Balsa is a fast growing tree and is considered a crop!
Three to five years to get good quality lumber.
Your welcome to give us a call at 760-434-3030 if you have any questions or just stop by the shop and have a look.
Thanks,
Mitch
